Cat Rigamortis

WHO keeps looking up “cat rigamortis” on google and hitting my blog? could you please leave me a comment just to tell me why you are looking for it? because at the moment i can’t decide whether to picture you as a spotty 12yr old who wants to see minging stuff on the net, or someone who is studying medicine or something and is actually using the internet for useful research. either way, this blog contains 3 mentions of cat rigamortis. two refer to google analytics, (that includes this post) and the other is a brief mention of dead cats in the post about my first nights in Peru. Not much information, but then i shouldnt feel guilty, its you looking up cat rigamortis, not me.

Update:I’ve had a couple of comments left after this post and it’s genuinely sad, people finding out how long it was since their pet died. I am a huge cat person (see below for my last cat, who was there before I was born and died when I was 18), and I feel like I shouldn’t really end this post on a negative note. So here is a link to the Wikipedia definition of rigor mortis, Its pretty interesting stuff. Rigor mortis is caused at a cellular level by the closing of the sarcomeres I think, causing a buildup of calcium ions which inhibit the muscles from relaxing. It sets in any time between 4 and 24 hours after death, but the speed at which it takes hold is affected by temperature and other things. So there you have it people, you made me grow up. Here’s a picture of my old cat, Elsa.

And here is another.

  1. This morning is my first time to look it up. I woke up to find one of my pet cats had died last night and rigamortis set in I’m attempting to funnel my grief into something active, thus google’ing to see if I might pinpoint when in the last 4 hours he passed away.
I can’t speak for anyone else of course, but it may be the same thing. On a google search, your site comes up very early on and highlighted with cat rigamortis. Perhpas if you rephrased it as something like r. in a cat?

  2. For me I just decovered my youngest cat dead about 5 hrs ago. he was his normal self this morning, when we found him he was cold and hard. So i was just curious about an approximate time of death. It looked almost like he died in a peaceful sleep. he was laying on top of the tv eyes closed, mouth closed leg relaxed.

  3. I looked up cat rigamortis due to the same reasons as the others here. My cat seemed like she was sleeping at 1115 in the morning and by 145p it had died and it was getting stiff. I wondered how long it took for it to start because I wanted to know time of death and also if it wears off and when because we want to bury it in the back yard. She was also a stray that was taken in and she was with me for about 2 & 1/2 years so she was part of the family.

  4. I was looking this site up because my beloved cat Xavier passed away yesterday. I knew he was sick and had set an appointment with the vet. I went to work, and when I got back home, I found him laying at the bottom of my basement steps on the cement. And he was stiff. As you can imagine, my heart was broken, and I cried. He was the most precious creature I’ve ever known in my life. He was only 5 years old. And I suspect he died of cancer. And since I have no children, he bacame my baby, and I spoiled him. When I found him, I thought he was just laying there, and was shocked that he was stiff. I wanted to know how long it might have been since he passed away. I am going to miss him. He has left a huge hole in my heart. Thank you for letting me vent as well as learn some information.

  5. I just watched a zombie movie. I was considering how they move in such a slow and jerky fashion even if they were very recently dead. So I was curious as to when rigor mortis sets in and as such, how long zombies could maintain a normal range of functions before they would be slowed to that classic stiff and shuffling pace. I mentioned nothing about cats in my search, and yet this site still came up on the very first page of search results. So hits to the site may not not necessarliy be in reference to cats in particular. I saw the bit about posting as to how I found the site and thought I would add my two cents.

In addition, my heart goes out to those of you who have lost your beloved pets. I myself have two cats I’ve hand-raised since they were only 2 days old and dread the day they will no longer be with me….

    PS. Elsa’s beautiful!

  6. I just did a search in Google to see how to spell rigor mortis – I spelled in rigamortis and your site was the the 3rd one down and it jumped out at me. I now see I spelled it wrong – or is there more than 1 way to spell it since you have it as rigamortis……..
We used to have two cats. One live to a ripe old age of 17 and the other layed down on the kitchen floor and died right before my eyes at the age of 13. It was funny – I knew he was dying when it happened and I called the kids and said quick some and say good bye to Jerry. (we had a Tom and Jerry) I always wondered if I should have done that (called the kids) they were kind of young, about 14 and 9. They are 24 and 19 now – I’ll have to ask if they remember that.

  7. We just came home from my uncle’s birthday and my cat of 16 years passed away tonight. I just wanted to know approx. what time he passed away. This cat was special and I will never forget him. I came home this weekend from school and he passed the same day I said my goodbyes. He had been sick for about a week and has had diabetes for 3 years. Thanks for the blog, it helped me pinpoint the approx. time, so I know when he went. In loving memory of Tiger.

  8. We had our cat Twinkle for 21 years, we got her when I was 5 and im now 26, she died from old age it finally caught up with her on Monday morning last at about 7, she had become very slow and unsteady on her feet the last week or two (had to carry her all over the house was funny) and we had been to the vet with her so kind of knew it was coming, I took a video of her Sunday night before going to bed she was barely moving and not responding to me which was very unlike her, I heard her crying so went downstairs to her in the kitchen, she managed to get herself out of her bed and like a wounded animal struggled & carried herself into our living room where she collapsed onto her side and died there lying beside me, it was one of the saddest thing I’d ever seen. It didn’t look like she was in pain didn’t last for more than a minute from when she hit the deck, it was strange there was a moment when she looked at me and you could see that she was panicking & didn’t know what was happening to her. I miss her terribly esp growing up with her from such a young age, she was always around and now she isn’t…our house just aint the same, she was my best mate. I guess like some of comments from ppl above that’s why I found this site, kinda weird really looking up cat death but what can ye do, and seen as we’re on the subject of cat rigamortis, when I got home from work that day and went to bury my little mate she was solid as a rock, I’d placed her back into her bed that morning after she’d died kinda fixed her into her sleeping position and when I took her out that evening she was rigid all her limbs stayed the exact same way was crazy looking.
Anyway just thought I’d share my story aswell, tis a good blog.

    • Like, some of the others I found my 19 year old cat dead and stiff and was curious to know how long he had been dead. It was one of the saddest days of my life, he had been with me since I was 20. My cat had tried to go up the stairs and was frozen in motion, with his mouth open. Too sad. I knew he had been sick in the last days, but was hoping he would recover.

  9. My cat of 17 years died on Thursday and like many of the others I was keen to know the time of death. Funny enough it was really her back legs that were the most stiff. She wasnt in a very comfy looking position and I would have liked to think she hadnt been there all night like that. It has been very sad and a difficult week watching her decline and trying to decide what to do for the best. Better though that she was at home and is now buried in the garden that being put down at the vets.

  10. Same as the others–lost my kitty and didn’t want to bury too soon before the brain and spirit are completely, unquestionably gone, but don’t want to rearrange the limbs to fit in the box while he is stiff–wondering how quickly the rigor mortis will dissipate. Too sad. I did take him to the vet when he reached the point of being weak and I could tell he would not recover–I wanted to spare him that panic and fear and the death howl and loss of control of limbs and functions that can happen at the end and also I wanted to make sure I was there and that he did not die alone. If you love your cat and don’t want him or her to suffer, try to figure out when the end is coming (stopping eating and drinking and becoming weak muscularly are some signs–your vet can help you know how to judge). If you can, take your cat to a vet you trust or there are also vets that will come to your house in many places, although with the ones I contacted the timing was not right and the costs were pretty high plus some sounded too business-like, so I decided better to take him to a place he was known and loved–the vets who cared for him from the time he was a magnificent, healthy kitty, through his illness. A friend drove us and I just carried him in my arms in a blanket. He was my darling.

  11. I read the other blogs, seeing them makes me so sad on seeing how other people lose one of the things most precious to them.
I’ve dealt with the death of a cat before, and of course, I was extremely emotional. But this time, it something completely beyond me.
My cat who was 2 1/2 years old died yesterday. She was one of the things I had cherished most in my life. I had known her since the day she was born (I was there when the mom went into labor). The owner was a good friend of mine, and so I was over with the kittens all the time. I had known since the first time she meowed at me, she was going to be mine. I took her, raised her, and loved her. Me and her had some of the funniest conversations :P. But yesterday, I got a phone call about a little black cat on someone’s lawn. I rushed over there with my father and found her, stiff as a board. I went into shock, and fell crying. My father had said she was probably hit by a car, and crawled to the nearest lawn, because it looked like she was in complete shock, but didn’t go through much pain. We took her, and I sat in the back of the van crying beside her. I asked why she was so stiff and he told me it was called Rigor Mortis. He wouldn’t tell me what it was because it would have only upset me more, and that’s how I ended up here.
I’ve found out she died at about 10:30 or so that morning. I actually passed where she was when I headed for school. I felt so helpless. I feel so helpless. I know there’s nothing I can really do.
With the bylaw here, they take animals to a part of the dump. We had no choice because we had to dispose of the body, but we ended up going to the wrong place, and we didn’t make it in time to the other one. So, at this moment, she’s in a bag, in my backyard. My mother said she would pay for cremation. So of course, I’m torn right now, having the thought linger in my head that she’s only just a few meters away from me.
But, I will always cherish the time I had with her. Even now, she is still the thing that means most to me, though she’s not here. I love her so much, and always will.
After finding out this information, I’m glad I know when she died. And this blog has helped me I guess “relieve” my sorrows. Thanks.

  12. I had the same experience finding myself at your website, but that’s the web for you. Early this morning, my daughter found her cat motionless in the middle of the street. His name was FISH and he was 5 yrs. old. When she first got him, he was weeks old and fell inside the toilet, which is how he got his name. I also wanted to know the time rigor mortis sets in because while the cat was not moving, we thought he might have lost consciousness or wondered if we took too long to take him to the vet following the incident. I am full of guilt because Fish came to my house along with my daughter having previously lived in an apartment with her. At my house, he was not allowed to be inside due mostly to my now ex but now that this has happened, I feel it is my fault. Fish did learn to enjoy the outdoors and was quite a hunter. He didn’t like being inside any more although my daughter had plans for him to be an inside cat again once she finished her moving. Fish acted weird yesterday as though he may have been feeling sick then the accident. My daughter is inconsolable and I miss him too. Anyway, thanks for letting us all vent our emotions.

  13. I have always been against allowing pets to be “out door pets”…maybe for some people but not for me. Well due to an aggressive spraying issue my 7 yr old cat had since he was 6 weeks old…our doctor recomended that we let him go out for afew hours a day – - since were in the burbs and on a good amount of property – - and it wil be good to satisfy his hunting instincts. He seemed cautious of the street/cars for the first month but then I started to see him alittle more brave. Well, Wednesday I pet him as I left the driveway @ 1…and went on with my day running errrands in and outside the house. Around 5:30 I noticed him missing…and went to call him in…when I noticed him “sleeping”…under the picnick table. When I called and he did not move, I noticed his eyes open and tongue out..and he was stiff. I am miserable and wondering how he died, and how long he suffered. I assume he was hit by a car and ran to this safe place with the rest of his energy..but will never know. I wonder how long he was right outside my window suffering before I found him…so hard not to feel responsible..I need closure…. Thank you. Trish

  14. hej all i came back from university today to find my cat in a late stage of rigor, cold as ice, if that was not bad enough i discovered that my dog had killed it. It was hard to believe at first because they got along fine (from a human’s perspective) for years!
It would appear that the general consensous on this page is people are just trying to get some idea of when the pet passed away and i.m adhearing to that too.

  15. My beautiful boy norris was killed earley hours of saturday morning, im hurting like mad, and cant stop having bouts of crying.. i have looked up how long or any ideas on how long he may have been not with us…then i fell on your site and saw the pics of ur elsa.. she looks so much like norris… he was quirky, gave me unconditional love, i walked around the house with him on my back… im going to miss him so much, it really hurts.. have to tell someone so left you a comment.. hope you dont mind.. 16. my old ill beloved cat was given 2 injestions, “to put him to sleep” but he stayed warm for over 4.5 hours and then rigors started to set in. Is this normal? If it is or if it is not could he experience his envirment while still warm and possibalay breathing very slowly? Was he in pain?

  17. My16 yr old ill beloved cat was given 2 shots, “to put him to sleep” but he stayed warm for over 4.5 hours and then rigors started to set in. Is this normal? If it is or if it is not could he experience his surroundings while still warm and maybe even breathing very slowly? Was he in pain?

  18. My hamster died, and because of how far along the rigamortis was, he died thanksgiving… poor soul :( It’s not a kitty cat, but it’s still my pet… He’d been acting funny all month… Then finally, I can imagine, when he was ready to die, he crawled into his litle tiki hut, and passed away… Poor, poor hammy Dx You know, the little bugger loved his wheel :D He was a robo hamster! So fast he was, and when he would go too fast, he flipped himself :D I think he might’ve died from brain damage… I fed him well, too. I think too well because, after a while, he was too fat to flip himself!! haha! Well, anyways…. Rigamortis…. What a funny word.

  19. My friends cat was mauled by a coyote… Max (the cat)s guts were strewn all over the front lawn, do you think rigamortis set in? Serious question. :D

  20. I was actually studying human rigamortis, and looking for how long it took for it to set in. This came up when I googled the word. And being an inquisitive mind, I thought, “Why not know how long it takes for a cat as well?”
Although, after reading some of the comments on here, I feel I should share a sad dead pet story as well. My guinea pig (don’t laugh) died during the night a few months ago, and the stiffness of him was the most upsetting part I think. It’s just odd and disturbing and I miss this little rodent a lot.

  21. When I did a google search for the phrase “my cat is unsteady on her feet” your “blog” is the 7th result – most often, including myself – I don’t even notice the site’s title in the results I’m looking at the phrases…there’s your answer…I’m still seeking mine for my poor little Kathy kitty.

  22. well, my cat died about 1 hr ago. My mom and I rushed her to a Vet Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival. Apparently my cat was running along the top edges of my couch where I guess she got one of her paws stuck in one of the cushions and fell off the couch. I am not sure how it happened, but along back side of my couch there are some hard steps. I’m guessing she fell off couldn’t turn over on time hit her front head on the edge of the step knocked her out possibly snapped her neck. When we arrived at the hospital I noticed the cat was still flexible and my mom did not and refused to believe she was dead. That is what made me look for Cat rigamortis. My mom is still devastated, I mean it happened in front of her eyes. Her name was “Kitty”, we really couldn’t find a name for her so we just called her kitty. When I was gone for 4 yrs in the military, Kitty was the only thing that kept my mom company, kept her sane while I was gone. It’s just so tragic how it all ended. The Dr. when she snapped her neck, it was a quick painless death. Well, at least Kitty is in a better place now. I hope this answers your question.

  23. My gorgeous little friend, my cat Max, died today. My husband found him this morning in his usual spot where he seemed to be asleep, but when he looked closer he had died. It was so sudden because yesterday he was playing happily and showed no sign of illness. It was bitterly cold this morning and I wanted to work out what time he died so I wanted to know when rigamortis sets in. I would like to think that he died sometime yesterday afternoon and that the sun was beaming down on him rather than later that evening after we had gone to bed.

  24. You’ve made it into the top ten on Google for the word ‘rigamortis’. Just thought I’d let you know. =)

  25. I think this entire site is a massive vulva of a site, like the aids of google
    die in peace!
    Rita x

  26. Ditto to the above, my gorgeous tabby cat Percy died very suddenly on Thursday, died peacefully in his sleep in a big double bed with the heating on full blast (nice way for him to go). Rigamortis had already set in by the time we found him and I was just curious as to how long he had been dead. We don’t think he got back up after we left for work, so I was hoping he had died soon after as i am torturing myself that he lay there alll day in pain before passing away. Love ya big fellaxx (thats Percy not you, lol)

  27. I lost my cat on Wed. he had a growth in its left ear. I brought him to the vet but because of low red blood count, i was advised that it he was not in a condition to operate. Never know his age, I had him when he was already full grown and I looked after him for 11 years.
He was very close to my heart, was very sad but I did not cry over him. Brownie was his name, and he was both beautiful and unique looking. He was very large, ad very proud. Even now when i think about him, I get depressed.
He stayed at my sis place who put out food (that I bought for him), and I visit twice a week. When I found him on the Wed night at 8 pm, he was already stiff and cold. i wrapped him with a towel and placed him into the rubbish bin . poor brownie, what a wretched end to a beautiful cat’s life.

  28. I’m trying to write a book in which a cat is killed, and I am trying to figure out if its body would be stiff or limp the following day…

  29. I wasn’t looking up rigamortis at all. I was looking up rigatoni. When I saw rigamortis in the google suggestions box I clicked it, confused because I thought that word was spelled rigor mortis. Your blog is the third link on google for the word rigamortis. The first words of the google preview were, “WHO keeps looking up ‘cat rigamortis’ on google and hitting my blog?” I was morbidly curious. . . you know what they say about curiosity.

  30. my interest is the same as all others. trying to find a time line. i care for a couple of feral cats in my neighborhood, and this morning on my way to work i saw one of them laying on the side of the road, a couple of blocks away from my home. at least i’m not feeling as bad as i had been, and his getting hit was not related to my calling out to him for dinner. i am guessing he was hit very very early this morning. thanks for the info.

  31. Next doors cat snuffed it and i wanted to know when it will go all floppy so it will fit into a box

  32. i looked this up as i dicovered my cat had manged to hang himself in my bathroom window and wanted to no wot time frame it was in which this happened. i was not a very nice thing to wake up to as he was my best friend and my baby as i was told i was unble to have childern but now have 1 but he was always my 1st. i love him dearly and am very upset by it all as it could have been provented if my lazy landlord had fixed my venting in my bathroom there for the window would not have had to be open. if any1 knows of a good site to vent my greif plz let me no xx

  33. My 18 year old cat died sometime last night and I was trying to get an idea as to when it had happened.

  34. I was looking for any stories of a cat being revived after rigor mortis had begun to set in.

Our cat died a horrible, violent death in the middle of night from feline parvovirus, within hours of showing symptoms.
We tried very hard to keep him alive until the time when the fucking 9-5 veterinary hospital was supposed to open (what does it say that these assholes are closed at night and only offer emergency service to long-time, regular customers?).
We tried for hours to revive him after his heart stopped beating and we gave up when rigor mortis began to set in.
I’m concerned that maybe we gave up too soon.

    Moral of the story:
Get all of your cats vaccinated against feline parvovirus, right fucking NOW … even your indoor cats!

No veterinarian has ever expressed to me just how contagious and serious this virus actually is.

We decided against vaccination a year ago on the basis that, because our cat is an indoor cat, it’s far more likely that he would die from the side effects of the vaccines than contract one of the actual viruses.
We explained this to the veterinarian and she said NOTHING about how extremely possible it is for an indoor cat to contract feline parvovirus.
It turns out that the virus is EVERYWHERE and it can survive outside of a host (on the ground, in your carpet, on your old pair of shoes, on your lawn or patio, etc) for over A YEAR!

It’s unreal that no veterinarian has ever told us about this!
It should the first thing a vet says to every person who walks in with a cat.

The parvovirus vaccine is inexpensive, has a very high success rate and very low chance of side effects.
The vets should offer this one for free just to help irradicate this motherfucker.

But, hey, if they actually gave a shit, they wouldn’t charge so much money that people constantly choose to euthanize (KILL) their pets instead … and they wouldn’t close up shop at 5PM … and they wouldn’t refuse to help a dying cat just because he’s not a regular customer.

  35. After reading some of the heart-wrenching stories above, I wanted to suggest to you people out there who truly love your cat, that you look into getting your hands on a decent amount of morphine for future use.

When your cat becomes very old and very sick and you and your vet are certain that she will die very soon, and there is definitely, absolutely, positively nothing left that can be done to prevent it, consider giving your cat a lethal overdose of morphine.
You’ll have to do the research to find out how to get the morphine and how much would be a lethal dose for your cat.
Find out exactly how much would be a lethal dose, then double or triple that amount to be safe.

If you can’t handle administering a lethal dose of morphine, you can consider the alternative of keeping your cat very heavily dosed on a pain killer that is safe for cats, until she dies ‘naturally’.

As many cat lovers can tell you, the end can be very scary and painful for your cat.
You have the power to change that.

  36. I lost my little baby Zoe last saturday to say Im heart broken is the understatement of the century, I cried so hard my throat is still sore a week later and Im still very upset I dont think I will ever get over losing her she was a very precious little lady. She had a beautiful coat she was a tabby but didnt have the balck marking, my daughter always said she looked like a koala bear or a squirral, but we always called her our little sparrow because she was so tiny. I had her for 9 years and she gave nothing but pure love to us in that time a pure little sweet heart if ever there was one. I dont know exactly how old she was because she was a rescue but they reckon she was about 3 or 4 or maybe more so she was fairly old when she passed. The thing that really gets to me though was she was fine on friday night ate her dinner was nuzzling away like always. I went to bed about 7am and she was running about like usual and then at 2.30 my daughter woke up and found her on the floor she thought she was just asleep but when she touched her she didnt make the little sound she always made and then she realised she was dead, her little tongue was sticking out and her back legs where really stiff I didnt even try to revive her cos I knew she was well gone but I would like to know exactly for how long cos I ache now thinking she was there for a long time all on her own dead on the floor, my poor little baby. Im really finding it hard to sleep without her cos she always came in with me and would snuggle up beside me and I would rub her belly and now the bed is just empty and my little furrball isnt there any more. I knew she was going to die but it just came so sudden on saturday I really wasnt expecting it. Last year I found some lumps on her and she had them removed but there was one in her mouth they couldnt take out and then she kept getting cystitis and the vet told me that she was really old and if she kept getting sick she may have to be put down so in a way Im glad I didnt have to make that decision cos I dont think I would have been able to at least she passed away in her own house, I just hope she didnt suffer and it was quick, from reading some of the posts on here it seems some cats just go to sleep and dont wake up so that has giving me a bit of comfort. I will always miss her and am very grateful for the nine lovely years I had her in my life and seeing her there has been many special little kitties very much loved by their owners who will miss them terrible but of course I think my Zoe was the most special I would give anyting to have her back even just for a few hours just for one more cuddle and to hear those super purrs. I will miss you Zoe (little sparrow) so much, my heart is broke into a million pieces, love you forever little snuggle bugs you have left a mark in my soul forever xxxx

  37. My interest stems from the same reasons most other people are giving. My little cat Lily was killed by a car recently. I’ve been torturing myself ever since, wondering how long she had lain suffering before she’d died as she’d been missing for about 48 hours before she was found by a neighbour’s dog. She was very stiff on the side that had been closest to the ground. You could hear a bubbling noise coming from her tummy and she was extremely smelly. I suppose I was just looking for some sort of closure, hence stumbling across your site trying to come up with a timeline. Reading all the other stories has gone a long way to help. I will never forget her and she has been laid to rest in my garden near the Budlea where she enjoyed chasing the butterflies.
    R.I.P. my beautiful Lily 06/07/07 – 04/07/09

  38. This evening I found one of my cats beside our house dead, it had a couple of wounds, one going across the stomach / chest and one on the side, it was truly one of the saddest things I had ever seen because he was the most friendliest and definitely not a bully cat. I hadn’t heard any cat fights at all during the day (there are some menacing bully cats around) so was trying to see if I could get a time frame when he might of passed away.

In the last couple years 2 of our cats have gone missing (we originally had 3 but one gave birth to 5 and we gave 2 kittens away to friends, so we had 6 because we are animal lovers). The first one was one of our male kittens, just dropped off the face of the earth, I hope at the very least someone took him cause he was such a fat fluffy cute cat and nothing bad has happened to him, the other was one of the older cats, we found a trail of blood that we couldn’t trace once we got to grass so we fear the worst. He was also the shyest and most afraid of other cats.

So now we only have 3, and only one original of the three cats we had. We think it’s a certain big black and grey tabby that’s getting into fights and killing them, if I knew for certain I’d either kill the cat myself or relocate it VERY bloody far away in the middle of the bush where the only thing it could pick on are mice. Me and my sister are training all 3 other cats to be indoor cats.

  39. I too had wondered when my cat had died, because he (even though it was only about two years that I had had him) was my best friend and I wanted to try and find out when he had died. According to a very un-trusting soucre he had died around 9:00/9:30 on Sunday night, (I found him on Monday around 2:05) but I do not believe that because in our sun (we live in the tropics) he would have already had bugs and such flying around him because he would have been laying in the sun for about ten or more hours. And not only that but I have to walk past where I had found him everyday at least twice, and even if I leave my house at 6:00 I would still have seen my cat lying on the side of the road, or the blood from his head injury. I just wanted a proper date, and time of death so that I can mourn him properly because he was not only my best friend as I said earlier, he was like my baby. He was a very, very, very cooky cat.

As I put all I want is the E.T.o.D.

  40. I lost my little female calico yesterday. I am devasted! We don’t know what happened. It’s a freak thing. We feel she may have been attacked but by what we don’t kno. My fiancee who was home all day heard nothing out of the ordinary. He went out for his run as usual and when he came home at about 10:30 that morning he sat down on our white bench sitting on the front pourch and she rubbed up against his legs as her usual custom and he sat there and stroked her back. She was happy and acting normal. My youngest came home from school at around 4pm had a snack and then asked to go ride his back. He went outside for about five minutes then came back in the house and asked where Cali was. My fiancee said she was out there and thought she’d be near or around the bushes by the house. He went outside to find her and he noticed her little cat house was knocked over as well as her water bowl and then he spotted her laying in the grass. He was so freaked out by what he saw. It is a very sad and tragic thing. We don’t know what attacked her. There was no blood and no obvious wounds on her. She was my little killa calli. That’s what I nicknamed her. I miss her very much and am so saddened by what has happened to her. He found her with her eyes and mouth still open. My 8 year old son saw her too. She never ever ventured far from her post. She was too skittish and I wish I knew what happend but I guess I’ll never know. She will be missed!

  41. I also looked up this type of thing because I found my cat dead on a main road. I was trying to find out how long after death rigor mortis set in & for how long it lasted. He was missing five days when I found him & was in rigor.

  42. Hi. Wanted to see how quick it sets into cats. I found a cat at my work dead and her body already stiff. Wanted to find out how long she went unchecked – knowing how long the rigor took to set it might give me an idea.

  43. The same as the majority…
My Cat went missing Tuesday Morning, Tuesday evening a neighbour said he was in their kitchen.

I found him Wednesday evening about 7:30 and rigomortis had on not fully set in. I believe he was hit by a car and carried on running and died of shock.

I just wondered how long ago he may have died.

  44. I was looking up Rigor-Mortis, because my cat got hit and killed by a car. I put him in a big box, right after it happened. He was still warm and pliable. By the time we decided what to put him in for good, Rigor had already set and we couldn’t get him into the smaller box. I was wondering how long we would have to wait to be able to move him again. We ended up just putting him in another type of box. I miss you Grady Cat!!! I loved him so much…
